CHANGING LIVES THORUGH GROUP COUNSELLING THERAPY

A SUCCESS STORY

Ikageng Bomme group counselling has been identified as a best practice by USAID in 2012. It has been replicated in various sites in Botswana. The logic of using the mutual aid process rests on the belief that women are proud, resourceful, and aware of personal and systemic oppression.

The mutual aid process fosters unity and hope as well as collective support. It encourages information sharing and problem solving. It also relies on effectiveness of strength-in-numbers to achieve meaningful behavioral change. The group work holds great potential for assisting and supporting women sex workers as they navigate the challenges of their trade.

This group approach provides counseling sessions with FSWs that focus on behavior change, decision-making, and removing barriers to engaging in responsible sexual relationships.
